A plumbing crew can have a full van and still leave without the camera needed for its next service call. Plumbing tool tracking software should help the office reserve that camera, identify the unit collected, and see whether it came back ready to use. A booking, a tool assignment, and a GPS position supply different pieces of that record. Plumbing tool tracking software manages tools and equipment inventory for plumbing businesses.

This comparison is for plumbing business owners, managers, and technicians managing company-owned reusable equipment, such as cameras, drain machines, and press tools. These records help staff check availability and condition before assigning a machine to the next crew.

Plumbing Equipment Tracking Software

When comparing plumbing software, FieldPulse is my starting point for a growing residential business that needs to schedule shared drain machines, cameras, or press tools with a crew. ServiceTitan has the stronger enterprise case for equipment carrying its own tracking hardware. BuildOps fits commercial plumbing contractors who need vehicle movement beside dispatch and project work.

An existing Jobber, Housecall Pro, or FieldEdge team may prefer adding a tool workspace or fleet partner. The purchase decision then includes the extra subscriptions and the daily handoff between applications. QuoteIQ’s stock and employee-location features provide context, but they leave more of the individual tool record to the company.

This guide covers reusable company gear, from a locator kit to a trailer-mounted hydro jetter. Use our plumbing inventory management guide for fittings, consumables, and material quantities. Customer-owned equipment and repair histories belong in the plumbing customer asset management guide.

Quick Verdict

FieldPulse: best practical starting point for residential shared-equipment scheduling. Assignment Users let the office book company gear with technicians and check for scheduling conflicts. Collection, condition, and return still need a handoff process; vehicle Fleet Tracking costs extra.

ServiceTitan: best enterprise route for fleet and high-value equipment location. Fleet Pro adds compatible vehicle and asset devices to a larger operating system. Include the tracking subscription, hardware, and implementation in the budget.

BuildOps: best fit for commercial fleets supporting complex jobs. Fleet+ connects vehicle information with dispatch, timecards, and maintenance. Identify separately how shared tools will be assigned and returned.

Jobber: a simple service workflow with a separate Ply tool register. This is useful for an existing Jobber team that needs identifiable units and responsibility records. Fleet partners handle vehicle tracking.

Housecall Pro: a residential service platform extended through Force and Ply. Force supplies vehicle GPS; Ply supplies a separate place to maintain tool units and assignments.

FieldEdge: a tracking extension for an established fleet. FleetSharp and Ply address different parts of the equipment problem while the business keeps its service platform.

QuoteIQ: limited for dedicated company-tool custody. Product locations and an employee’s phone position cannot establish which camera was returned, its condition, or its physical position.

The Tools in the Wild editorial team assessed FieldPulse, ServiceTitan, BuildOps, Jobber, Housecall Pro, FieldEdge, and QuoteIQ in October 2026. We drew on desktop and iPhone observations from trial and paid accounts, alongside official equipment, integration, and tracking-device documentation. The comparison considered plumbing businesses ranging from owner-operators to organizations with roughly 50 technicians.

The review examined equipment identity, reservations, responsibility, condition, location evidence, and the complete cost of the setup. Hardware descriptions come from the documented device and installation workflows. The plumbing examples below are buyer demo checks, not additional measured field-test results. Our editorial methodology explains the wider review process.

What Plumbing Tool Tracking Software Needs to Record

Equipment Identification

Plumbing contractors need to distinguish the type of camera from the actual unit collected. A manufacturer and model identify the type. The company ID or serial number identifies the camera that left the shop. Keep that identity through reservations, transfers, repairs, and returns so a quantity of two does not hide the fact that only one complete kit is available.

Kit Contents

Kit contents matter. A drain camera may include a reel, monitor, transmitter, batteries, and charger; a press tool needs the appropriate jaws. Record missing accessories with the unit. Returning a case should not make an incomplete kit look ready for the next service call.

Condition Tracking

Condition also needs to change the dispatch decision. A damaged cable, missing camera head, leaking jetter hose, or incomplete jaw set should be visible before the office assigns the equipment again. Follow the manufacturer’s service requirements and keep inspection findings and repair arrangements with the machine.

What Does Its Location Actually Mean?

The job schedule shows a planned destination. An assignment records the person, truck, or job responsible for a unit. A vehicle tracker reports the vehicle carrying the device. Equipment with its own compatible tracker can report its own position when reception and reporting allow it.

For a plumbing dispatcher, the difference is practical: a van arriving at the property does not confirm that its camera kit was loaded. Check which evidence the screen supplies and when that information was last updated.

Plumbing Equipment Checks to Use in a Demo

Use the company’s actual equipment list and job details to demonstrate the proposed configuration. Ask field technicians to show mobile access to the intended record at the job site. These checks assess how the workflow would handle shared plumbing gear; they do not imply that every product has the same controls.

  • Two drain investigations need the same camera: Reserve the identified kit with each crew and inspect any conflicting booking. (Informs whether dispatch can spot an availability problem before crews leave.)

  • A locator moves between service vans: Record the receiving person or vehicle and find the latest assignment. (Informs whether responsibility follows the unit through a field handoff.)

  • A press tool returns without the required jaws: Record the missing accessory and show how staff would avoid booking the incomplete kit. (Informs whether “returned” and “ready” remain distinguishable.)

  • A jetter needs repair before its next scheduled job: Find the unit, record its condition, and inspect the upcoming assignment. (Informs how maintenance or damage reaches the dispatcher.)

  • A vehicle is at the site but a camera cannot be found: Separate the vehicle signal, tool assignment, and any device mounted to the tool. (Informs which location evidence the purchased system actually provides.)

  • The office buys a replacement machine: Identify where its unit, serial or warranty details, and future responsibility will be maintained. (Informs whether the purchase becomes a useful reusable-equipment record.)

FieldPulse: Best for Scheduling Shared Plumbing Equipment

FieldPulse is my preferred starting point for a growing residential company whose main difficulty is getting shared equipment onto the correct job. Its wider service workflow also suits light commercial work. A plumbing business can prepare the crew and reserve a particular camera or press tool in the same scheduling process.

Job Scheduling for Shared Plumbing Tools

In FieldPulse’s company-equipment workflow, the machine has an Assignment User profile. For plumbing teams with multiple technicians, staff book that profile alongside the crew; it appears on the dispatch schedule and participates in conflict checking. The equipment role has no app access. Employees manage the job through their own accounts.

Name the resource so dispatch can distinguish it from similar gear, such as “Equipment — Drain Camera 02.” FieldPulse describes this arrangement as avoiding a full software license for each equipment profile. Ask for the equipment role’s cost in the proposed quote.

The reservation still needs an operational handoff. If one plumber passes the camera directly to another crew, record the collection, current responsibility, and return condition through the company’s chosen process. A free slot on the calendar cannot confirm that the monitor and charger are back in the case.

Fleet Tracking is a separately paid vehicle capability covering GPS, geofences, driving information, and maintenance reminders. It supplies a different signal from the Assignment User reservation.

The base subscription observed in the review was about $99 per user monthly before discounts, with Fleet Tracking additional. For a business also buying jobs, inventory, and customer-asset workflows, that connected operating setup makes FieldPulse the strongest residential option here. Confirm the required collection and condition records during the demo.

ServiceTitan: Best for Enterprise Fleet and High-Value Equipment Tracking

A plumbing company coordinating its entire fleet and moving expensive machinery among branches and jobs may need the machine to carry a tracking device. ServiceTitan’s Fleet Pro provides the deeper enterprise route in this comparison. Its cost and administration make more sense for a defined fleet or high-value-equipment requirement than for a small borrowed-tool list.

Fleet Pro combines location information for vehicles and equipment with geofences, driving data, and maintenance. The documented long-life battery asset tracker gives suitable company equipment its own tracked identity. Its installation guide notes that the first GPS ping may take several hours. Location updates depend on successful reporting, including appropriate placement and reception.

For a trailer-mounted hydro jetter, a direct device signal can help distinguish the machine from the technician’s phone or an assigned truck. Staff still need to know whether that jetter is reserved, under repair, or ready for another job. Map position and dispatch readiness answer different questions.

Administrative tasks include driver, device, vehicle, and access configuration. These company fleet records are separate from ServiceTitan’s Installed Equipment feature, which concerns units at customer properties. Buying the base service subscription does not itself create live equipment location.

Reported base pricing in our comparison was $250–$500 per technician monthly, with implementation figures of $5,000–$50,000 or more. Fleet Pro and its hardware add to the total. Larger service organizations can justify that depth when they will administer the devices and use the resulting information; FieldPulse remains more proportionate for shared reservations.

BuildOps: Best for Complex Commercial Plumbing Fleets

Commercial plumbing crews may be working around access windows at job sites, equipment deliveries, and project phases. BuildOps is the strongest fit here when the dispatcher needs vehicle movement alongside that work. Its paid Fleet+ module extends the commercial service and project platform.

Fleet+ places trucks on the dispatch map with documented updates every 60 seconds. It connects vehicle information with jobs, geofenced timecard prompts, and vehicle maintenance. Azuga supplies the GPS, safety, and maintenance technology; Coast supports fuel-card controls for managing fuel costs.

The vehicle view can help the office follow an arrival or find a nearby truck for emergency calls. When a project needs a specific locator or press tool, ask where that unit’s responsibility and return will be recorded. Customer asset histories and nameplate capture document serviced equipment, so those features do not establish company-tool checkout.

Job costing can connect equipment rental and repair spending with the work. The accounting system holds cost data, but that financial entry does not identify who collected the machine. Match the proposed tool process to the commercial work rather than assuming the fleet map covers every item carried by a crew.

BuildOps uses custom pricing based on the proposed configuration. The review recorded reported base figures around $299 or more per user monthly, with modules and headcount affecting the purchase; Fleet+ costs extra. Its stronger value comes from using commercial operations with the fleet view. A residential team mainly booking shared machines should start with FieldPulse.

Jobber: A Simple Service Platform With Separate Ply Tool Records

An established Jobber team can keep its familiar plumbing service software while adding more equipment accountability. Its quotes, jobs, and billing remain part of that service workflow. Ply Tools supplies the separate tool workspace. The buyer should assess that workspace and its cost alongside Jobber.

Ply organizes tool groups and identifiable units with barcodes, assigned people, locations, and status. Staff can inspect a unit, distinguish available from in-use quantities, and mark damaged gear unavailable. Transfers can identify warehouse, truck, and job locations.

That distinction is useful when two camera kits look alike but one has a damaged reel. The company needs the affected unit’s identity and responsibility, not just a quantity of two. Tool purchase orders also provide a route to serial and warranty details when new equipment arrives.

The tool register and material integration are different surfaces. Do not assume that every tool assignment, condition field, or location appears in Jobber because materials synchronize. Have a technician update the actual tool unit and show the office where to find the change.

Eligible Jobber configurations support fleet partners including FleetSharp and Force. Those hardware-based vehicle services differ from Jobber’s phone-location waypoints and from the Ply register.

The review recorded standard Connect pricing for one user at $99 monthly on annual billing or $139 on monthly billing. The five-user option was $149 or $199 respectively. Ply, a fleet service, and devices add to those figures. This can be a focused extension for a current Jobber customer; a new buyer should compare the combined process with FieldPulse’s broader residential setup.

Housecall Pro: Residential Vehicle Tracking With Partner Tool Records

Housecall Pro can fit a residential plumbing company that already values its job workflow and wants to add vehicle position. Its Vehicle GPS Tracking uses Force hardware in service vehicles. Housecall Pro shows the vehicles on its map, while the Force dashboard adds trip, driving, maintenance, and geofence functions.

Ply provides a separate route for tool identity, assigned users, locations, and status. Have the vendor show which of those fields are visible in Housecall Pro and which employees update in Ply. Decide where the plumber will record taking a camera and where the office will check its return.

Customer Property Profiles concern the customer’s installed equipment. For company gear, the business needs the partner tool record as well as a consistent handoff. The truck reaching an address is useful evidence of a visit, but it cannot confirm that a particular kit arrived complete.

The published vehicle GPS price in the comparison was $20 per vehicle monthly without contracts. The main Housecall Pro subscription and Ply configuration are additional purchases.

In our October 2026 signup comparison, the starting subscription displayed $59 per month for handyman and $79 for plumbing, without an identifiable difference in product configuration or functionality. That industry-based upcharge adds cost without an identifiable feature gain in the tested signup flow.

For an existing residential user, those extensions may be practical. A new buyer should compare the combined partner costs and the places staff must update records with FieldPulse’s native operating flexibility.

Try Housecall Pro →

FieldEdge: A Tracking Extension for Established Fleets

FieldEdge is most relevant when an established plumbing operation wants to retain its service platform. FieldEdge’s FleetSharp partnership supplies vehicle and asset tracking through suitable devices, including driving information and vehicle maintenance. What gets located depends on the device selected and its placement.

A separate Ply Tools workspace can maintain company gear, responsibility, locations, and status. The FieldEdge material integration does not imply that all durable-tool assignments synchronize. FieldEdge customer equipment histories serve another purpose: retaining information about units at a client’s property.

A trailer jetter may need both a tracking device and an assignment record. Its position will not tell dispatch that a hose is damaged or that another crew has reserved it for tomorrow. Ask staff to demonstrate where they would record that exception and where the next dispatcher would see it.

The review recorded reported base pricing around $100–$125 per user monthly and setup of $500–$2,000. Tracking and tool products are additional. A QuickBooks integration should not be credited with GPS or custody functions.

Keeping a familiar platform can be sensible when these extensions solve a defined problem. New buyers have clearer starting points for different needs: FieldPulse for residential reservations, ServiceTitan for enterprise device tracking, and BuildOps for commercial fleet context.

QuoteIQ: Stock and Employee Visibility With Limited Tool Custody

QuoteIQ remains a weaker choice in this comparison for dedicated company-tool tracking. Its inventory locations and employee information can help with general operating context. They leave the company with more work to identify an individual camera, its borrower, and its condition.

Inventory products can be associated with warehouse, truck, or employee locations. EmployeeHub location features concern employees’ phones while they are clocked in. Neither record is a signal from a device mounted to the camera itself.

A company can create a separate product or note for a machine and maintain responsibility that way. Staff then have to keep its name, condition, and handoff convention consistent. That is a less structured route than Ply’s unit assignments or Fleet Pro’s compatible equipment devices. QuoteIQ’s notes and forms also approximate customer-asset information rather than providing a dedicated customer asset workflow.

Native inventory was available on Elite at $299.99 monthly for ten users and on Max. Pro was $199.99 for four users without the same inventory module; other operating features depend on the package.

Our estimating tests recorded 6–10-second screen delays and offline errors. Those observations concern estimating and do not establish failed equipment-tracking transactions. They still matter when choosing an app that plumbers will use throughout the workday.

For a buyer needing shared-machine bookings, explicit unit custody, or hardware location, demonstrate that exact requirement before accepting stock or employee features as a substitute. QuoteIQ’s genuine inventory functionality does not change my equipment-tracking verdict.

Job Management and Equipment Handoffs

Plumbing Equipment

Setting Up Job Management and Handoffs

For plumbing companies sharing multiple tools, begin with the units whose absence can delay work. Give each machine or kit a stable identifier, then decide which record staff will use at reservation, collection, transfer, and return. A technician should be able to find the right tool record without guessing which of several similarly named products represents the machine.

Handoff Procedures

At pickup, follow these steps:

  1. Record who collected the tool or kit.

  2. Check and note whether the required accessories are present.

For handoffs between service trucks:

  • Assign a new responsible person or location, even if the machine never returns to the shop.

On return:

  1. Inspect the kit.

  2. Record any missing or damaged components before making it available again.

Exception Handling

  • Keep a damaged camera or leaking hose visible as an exception for the person planning the next call.

  • Connect condition with availability.

  • Record the time of the latest observation so an old assignment is not mistaken for a fresh sighting.

For a setup spanning several applications:

  • Demonstrate a changed assignment and a damaged return before deciding that the handoff is manageable.

  • Ask office staff preparing the next call to identify who has the unit and whether it can be booked.

  • Check whether a corrected handoff requires double data entry.

Price the full arrangement. The clean-start Ply quote I obtained for one warehouse and three HVAC trucks was $280 monthly. It is a four-location reference from that quoted setup, not a separate plumbing quote or a universal price for every tool package. Add the main service subscription, tool workspace, tracking devices, fleet module, and implementation required by the chosen configuration.

Inventory Management Software vs. Tool Tracking

Inventory Management Overview

Plumbing inventory management software tracks parts and consumables, including truck stock and quantities at warehouse locations. Its inventory control records material receipts, parts usage, and replenishment; low stock alerts concern a threshold, not whether a camera works. Equipment records preserve reusable units after plumbing jobs.

Purchase Orders and Accounting

Purchase orders and the accounting system document what the business bought and spent. To assess a setup combining inventory tracking and tools in one system, ask field technicians to demonstrate mobile barcode scanning for an identified machine. Check which record opens and what handoff update is stored. Confirm that the mobile scanning action records the intended handoff. Parts quantities and reusable-unit responsibility need the appropriate records.

How to Track Plumbing Customer Service Records

Keep customer service records in the customer management system, linked to the customer and property. Attach the installed unit’s identity, warranty, repairs, and service history to its asset record. A drain camera owned by the contractor should remain in the company equipment register, even when used at that property. The customer history explains what work was done; the tool record explains which reusable machine was assigned and returned.

Our customer asset guide linked above compares that installed-equipment workflow. For stock used during the repair, the plumbing inventory management software comparison covers quantities and material movements.

Frequently asked questions

Can a plumbing company reserve a specific camera for a job?

FieldPulse can represent company gear as an Assignment User and check its booking for conflicts. Give each camera a recognizable identity so dispatch reserves the intended unit. Demonstrate the separate collection and return process, including what staff record when a kit is incomplete.

What should happen when a locator moves between vans?

Update the identified unit’s responsible person or location when it changes hands. Ply supports unit assignments and transfers among warehouse, truck, and job locations. In a demo, find the latest assignment after the transfer and inspect how a mistaken entry would be corrected.

Does the vehicle map prove that the drain camera is on board?

It reports the location of the vehicle device. Use the camera’s handoff record to establish who collected it, and inspect any signal from a device attached to the camera separately. A technician’s phone location is another distinct observation.

How should damaged or incomplete equipment affect availability?

Record the condition against the individual machine and make the problem visible before dispatch reuses it. Ply can mark damaged tool units unavailable. Check how the proposed scheduling and tool setup handles a reserved camera needing repair or a press-tool case missing its jaws.

Can Jobber or Housecall Pro keep tool assignments inside the service platform?

The dedicated tool route described here uses a separate Ply workspace. Have the vendor show the exact record employees must update and the screen where the office will read its assignment, condition, and location.

When does a plumbing company need a tracker on the equipment itself?

It is worth evaluating when the company needs physical location evidence for a high-value machine rather than its planned destination or latest handoff. ServiceTitan Fleet Pro supports compatible asset devices, while FleetSharp supplies vehicle and asset tracking for relevant setups. Device choice, placement, reporting, and reception affect the result.
